What a day for geology! After a stop at the magnificent Goðafoss, (Waterfall of the Gods), we visited the Myvatn area, and the Krafla volcanic system. Here we explored an area with many interesting volcanic features: lava flows, geothermal features with solfataras and mud pots, colorful hydrothermally altered ground, and pseudocraters in Myvatn (Midge Lake). We also we saw some beautiful water birds and flowers. The grassland and rivers were teeming with birds, and often with their young. Fortunately we were mostly spared the onslaught of insects for which this area is famous.
