With a dusting of snow overnight, Ilulissat looked like a winter wonderland as we approached to begin our last day in Greenland. We were fortunate enough to have stunning weather to explore one of the highlights of the country, Disko Bay.

We anchored outside of Ilulissat, and the local boats picked everyone up to go see the bay full of icebergs from the Jakobshavn Glacier. Given how much ice calves from the glacier daily, it wasn’t surprising that we even saw some iceberg calving.

After lunch we went ashore to visit the Ilulissat Icefjord Center which combines both the physical and cultural aspects of the area through art installations. Following, a variety of guided walks were offered along the boardwalk to an overlook of ‘iceberg alley’ in Disko Bay.

In the evening, we had the captain’s welcome cocktails and dinner while sailing past the icebergs as the sun set. But the real treat was the arrival of a fin whale which approached us and came right across the bow of the ship after we had stopped to view it. It was a fitting end to the day!
