This morning, right after a wonderful breakfast on board the Delfin II, we jumped into our skiffs to explore the Iricahua Caño, in the Upper Amazon of Peru.
The sky was a little overcast, but the diffuse light was ideal for photography. Our skiffs this morning proved indispensable and ideal for navigating through the narrow network of canals at Iricahua. Our skiff drivers and naturalists also proved indispensable, for taking us through safely and identifying all of the many birds that we saw, that like to live inside the rainforest but in close proximity to the water.
Some particularly special sightings this morning, among the many birds that we saw, were the macaws. These colorful large parrots always make quite an impression, and they also seem determined to make quite an entrance. Their very loud calls can be heard long before we actually get to see them…. And then, there they are, unmistakable, blue and yellow macaws and scarlet macaws.
After our return to the Delfin II for lunch, the ship was repositioned to a different location, as usual, for our outings in the afternoon.
The later part of the afternoon we spent at Puerto Miguel, where we enjoyed the active pink and grey dolphins hunting fish. We also had the opportunity to visit a rehabilitation center on a small island, where we had much closer views of some of the monkey species of this area, from the comfort of our skiffs. The rescued monkeys on this island are more familiarized with the presence of people, so they were much less shy.
Upon our return from this afternoon’s outings, we were greeted with a lovely dinner, complete with live music. What an excellent way to end another great day in the Upper Amazon!
