In the morning we reached Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela Island. It was a calm navigation from east Isabela Island where we spent some hours at night admiring the majesty of a volcanic eruption! Moments after the ship anchored we boarded our Zodiacs to explore the shore of Volcán Ecuador. On this rocky shore with red cliffs we spotted Nazca boobies, storm petrels, penguins, cormorants and many other birds species. At the end of an amazing Zodiac ride we went snorkeling. This little corner is another vibrant world with so much life. There are many types of tropical fish, Galapagos penguins and plenty of sea turtles!
At the end of all these activities we started our journey towards Fernandina Island. This young island is covered by vast lava flows. This island is made of one single active volcano with an interesting history in the region. The last eruption on Fernandina took place in April 2009 and lasted a couple of weeks. On this basaltic shore several colonies of marine iguanas thrive along with sally light foot crabs and sea lions. As we explored the island we encountered some playful baby sea lions and there were sally light foot crabs literally dotting every rock.
Fernandina Island harbors the largest colonies of marine iguanas. They form large groups along the shore to bask under the tropical sun.
It was a fantastic day!
