Today we continue our expedition in the Galapagos Islands navigating along the western region.
This morning we visited a place called Urbina Bay located on Isabela Island. in the 50s this location experienced an uplift that brought the shoreline inland within a night. We hiked deeper along the trails to see the results of this event. The trail was fairly easy and some of the coral heads are still intact and show the strength of what an eruption caused by a volcano can cause. Along the trail there were some land iguanas, but the star of the show today were the giant tortoises which made their first appearance.
Then we got to the beach and enjoyed the rest of the morning until we returned to continue with the rest of the activities. Some participated in the famous mega swim from the beach back to the boat.
Later in the afternoon we moved to a famous cove for whalers in the 18th century, Tagus Cove. This location offers a particularly calm place for boats to anchor and rest. it is also located in the Bolivar channel which the best place to find whales in the Galapagos. So as we arrived the graffiti drawn by these navigators was revealed. We also went for snorkeling here to see for the last time on the expedition the flightless cormorants and penguins.
To end the day some of us went on a hike to see Darwin’s Lake and Darwin Volcano, while others kayaked or took a Zodiac ride along the shore.
