The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on February 1, 2017.

We spent the day at Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) off the southern coast of Cuba.  The island was allegedly the inspiration behind Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island.”  The island received its current name by Fidel Castro when he built several schools and brought kids from lesser developed countries there for a free education.  We visited Presidio Modelo, the prison where Fidel was kept during Batista’s time.  Later in the day we visited the town of Nueva Girona and explored a local art school.
