Today was a marvelous day of ship cruising throughout the Islands of the Four Mountains, a cluster of steep, rugged stratovolcano islands, the largest of which is Chuginadak. Although winds were fierce and periods of fog crept in, on the whole it was a beautiful day with excellent views.

We awoke to a view of Mt. Cleveland’s active (and smoking) volcano of Chuginadak beside us. We admired waterfalls in Skiff Cove and observed fumaroles as well as cliffs covered in murres and puffins on Kagamil Island.

In the afternoon we circumnavigated Chagulak Island, accompanied by the entertainment of millions of northern fulmars, among many other seabirds. Aside from birds, we spotted multiple small groups of orcas throughout the day as they transited along the Aleutians, and just before bed, we had the privilege of coming across at least two rarely sited sperm whales.
