Early this lovely morning we set off from Inverie to the beautiful island of Eigg. This fertile island of volcanic origin is inhabited by almost 100 people and is run by them through the Isle of Eigg Trust. Some of us decided to explore on our own, and many of us joined Steve, Konia and Stewart on an island walk. Meantime a mini-bus ride offered further scenic views.
After this island exploration our journey took us past the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, dating back to 1839, designed by Alan Stevenson. He was of a family of lighthouse engineers and the subject of Konia’s talk on Scottish lighthouses as we passed the most westerly point of the British mainland.
After lunch we arrived in Tobermory the “capital” (population just under 1000) of the Isle of Mull. Here the shops beckoned after a historical town walk with Stewart, Steve and Konia. Especially Choc-A-Holics had a great time at the Tobermory Chocolate Shop with yummy—guess what?—CHOCOLATE!
In the evening after dinner we were in for another treat: Sue and Richard Dewar brought live birds of prey on board, right in front of our eyes. They run a raptor centre on the island, looking after injured birds. They try to change people’s attitudes about birds of prey by doing talks and bringing along a few hand-reared animals. And even then the evening wasn’t over as many of us decided to explore the pubs of Tobermory, especially the Mishnish Pub which is only a stagger away.
