Guests aboard National Geographic Sea Bird, docked near Chichagof Island, awoke to a cloudy morning. Soon after breakfast, shuttles began running to the island to prepare for the day’s activities—hiking, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. Hikers could choose either a leisurely or active walk through old-growth forest to learn about ecology and watch for brown bear signs. Those who chose an aquatic approach were able to paddle and enjoy the bay while counting bald eagles at the forest’s edge; some kayakers were even greeted by a harbor seal. Our afternoon was spent cruising through Chatham Strait in the amazing company of a humpback whale.
