We woke up to a beautiful morning onboard National Geographic Venture, cruising Chatham Strait in route to our morning destination for kayaking and hiking in Kelp Bay. We were greeted by six humpback whales logging and diving at the entrance of the bay. Hikes ashore included bushwhacking through a mossy forest to reach a muskeg and bog lake, where we encountered many woodland creatures, including banana slugs.
While cruising Frederick Sound in the afternoon and into the evening, we were greeted by even more humpback whales, for a scene we lovingly describe as whale soup. It was nearly impossible to count the number of whales we encountered that were actively diving and surfacing.
