We left Puerto Natales early to catch the slack tide at Kirke Narrows at the exact right time of the morning. The weather was a bit drizzly, so we sent out Zodiacs with some brave souls to measure the wind and currents for our passage through this challenging, narrow sound. Around us, a few curious skuas and ashy-headed geese watched us. We were cleared to go and steamed through this passage easily, thanks to the Bridge Team!
We slowly cruised farther south through the Magellan Strait to continue our expedition towards Antarctica. Snowcapped mountains peeked through the clouds now and then, and we got some excellent views of the remarkable landscape of Southern Patagonia. This really is an impressive place.
During the day, we were treated to a lot of knowledge from our Naturalist Team, learning about everything from the travels of Magellan to the geology of Patagonia. Dan Westergren, on-board National Geographic photographer, showed us some of his amazing images. He gave us lots of inspiration for upcoming pieces of art.
Just as we went for cocktail hour and today’s recap, the Bridge Team spotted a small group of orcas just alongside the ship. It was a group of three with one big male. They joined us for a bit and treated us to some spectacular views. A black-browed albatross even sailed with us for a while.
