The National Geographic Quest spent the morning on Zodiac cruises around LeConte Bay, which is filled with icebergs that calved from the nearby LeConte Glacier.
In the afternoon, we explored Petersburg, a fishing village with Norwegian roots. The activities included walks through the muskeg, a bog with unique plants, including dwarf shore pine trees (the only pine tree that grows in Alaska), and carnivorous sundew plants. The weather was very warm, with temperatures in the 70s and blue skies.
Other activities included bike rides that covered 5.5 miles roundtrip through town and along the coast with a short stop at Sandy Beach. Zodiac tours explored the harbor, while Global Explorers participated in a plankton tow. They collected a sample of water from 30 feet deep, looked at it under a microscope and found thousands of invertebrates.
