Exploration continued today by surveying the Ucayali River, and our destination made it possible to discover the wonders of two of the most iconic places of the Upper Amazon: Llanalpa and Dorado River. We began our journey with a pre-breakfast skiff ride in order to explore the riverside area of Llanalpa. The blue and yellow macaws, which were perching on top of dead palm trees, gave the first surprise of the morning.
Farther upstream, the presence of red-bellied macaws all over the trees were the perfect decoration for a magnificent landscape. Once back on board the Delfin II, we enjoyed breakfast, and got everything ready for the next chapter of the morning activities.
Llanalpa gave us a spectacular wildlife display by hiking into a flooded forest that is dry because of the low river season. A white-throated hermit was found perching on top of a tree branch, and black-capped donacobius were heard at the distance as they concentrate on catching little insects out of the vegetation. Flowers from the different heliconia plant species made it perfect for a nice symphony of colors.
In the afternoon we had the opportunity to explore Dorado River, which happens to be one of the most well known places in the Upper Amazon. A comfortable skiff ride along the riverside was the best way to explore the area. Nature´s displays allowed us to witness a magnificent combination of sightings: cocoi herons flying, neotropical cormorants nourishing on small catfish, and one of the biggest surprises – a capybara that disappeared into the forest as soon as it saw the skiffs approaching.
Continuing upstream, the splendor of the place inspired us with a marvelous display of colors shown in a stunning sunset. Several juvenile white caimans were the biggest revelation found close to the water’s edge. Once it was totally dark, it was time to look for white caimans in the water ponds, as the reflection of their eyes is easily seen with the help of a flashlight.
The end of our journey was back onboard Delfin II in order to enjoy a marvelous cocktail hour before getting to know what surprises were waiting for us on the next day of exploration.
