We cruised south along the Pacific coast of the Baja Peninsula, making our way toward a new body of water, the Gulf of California. In doing so we entered one of the largest winter aggregation areas for humpback whales in Mexico!

By late morning we passed by the iconic “Land’s End” of Cabo San Lucas, the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. From there the wind calmed and the ocean flattened because of the wind shadow of the peninsula and the conditions became perfect for wildlife viewing. And find it we did! Before long, we saw whale blows from all sides. Pairs of grey whales crossed the bow while humpbacks breached in the distance. Hammerhead sharks swam alongside the boat, which is always a joy to see. We zigzagged along the coast of Los Cabos. We watched a cow and calf pair of humpbacks breach in tandem repeatedly. A large humpback surprised us by breaching close to our stern.

As the day closed, we had cocktail hour on the bow as the sun set over the Sierra de la Laguna. With yummy treats in hand, we watched whales blow along the shore and we bid the day farewell.
