Los Islotes is the location of the southernmost breeding colony of California sea lions here in the Gulf of California. As we cruised around the rocky islet this morning, it was obvious some of the female sea lions were pregnant with pups to be born later this spring. We observed a number of colorful reef fish once we joined the sea lions in their watery, and slightly salty realm. A number of bird species also inhabit Los Islotes. These included blue-footed boobies, magnificent frigatebirds, brown boobies, brown pelicans, and one great blue heron was observed on a nest. The afternoon was dedicated to one last exploration of the Sonoran Desert as we walked the beach and explored inland at Bahia Bonanza on Isla Espiritu Santos. The endemic, illusive black jackrabbit of the island remained that, illusive and slightly mythical.
