The first morning of the voyage truly displayed the beauty of the “rich coast” of Costa Rica. National Geographic Sea Lion approached our landing spot at Manuel Antonio National Park as the sun was rising. This protected area on the Central Pacific of Costa Rica was created thankfully to the vision of government authorities along with the local community of Quepos back in 1972.
Early risers explored the decks while some joined in yoga exercises before breakfast was served. Afterwards, the groups shuttling on expedition landing crafts to shore had the ability to choose guided hikes at Punta Catedral and Sloth Valley which provided sightings of sloths, monkeys, beautiful birds and reptiles. There was so much nature to take in and learn about, thanks to the help of excellent guides. The water was warm and delightful, which proved favorable to swimmers and beachgoers.
The first day off the ship educated us on facts and culture of Costa Rica, but this trip allowed for a great element of the United States- as some guests disembarked, in the evening, to the nearby town of Quepos to watch the Super Bowl. All together it was an enjoyable and satisfying day for the start of our week!
