Our last full day exploring the Peruvian Amazon started with a skiff visit to the Marayali River where we saw several very interesting birds, like the yellow-chinned spinetail, the yellow-hooded blackbird, the black-capped donacobius, and the wattled jacana. Some of us had a lucky encounter with a razor-billed curassow, a rare bird the size of a turkey!
Later we visited a local community called Amazonas where the locals showed us their way of life. They demonstrated how they use the fibers of the chambira palm to make a variety of objects and handcrafts, how they obtain the refreshing sweet juice of the sugarcane, and even invited us to one of their kitchens to show how they prepare some of their everyday meals.
In the afternoon we boarded our skiffs one last time to explore Priaña Creek. Afterward, we headed towards the confluence of the Marañon and the Ucayali Rivers, the place where the mighty system starts receiving the name of Amazon. There we toasted to celebrate our time together exploring the world’s biggest tropical rainforest.
