Our first expedition day delivered high temperatures and blue skies for adventures in Misty Fjords National Monument. We started began the day anchored in the glassy water of Sargent Bay in Behm Canal, just east of our embarkation town of Ketchikan. After our morning bear, kayak, and ship briefings, the staff naturalists introduced themselves and then the photo team presented an Introduction to Photography talk followed by a Q&A session.

Located in the southernmost region of Southeast Alaska, Misty Fjords National Monument is comprised of a massive 3,570-square-mile wilderness area of deep bays and towering granite cliffs surrounded by a temperate rain forest. National Geographic Sea Bird dropped anchor in Rudyerd Bay for an afternoon of kayaking and inflatable raft exploration among the steep cliffs and salmon-laded streams. What a spectacular way to start this 11-day photo expedition in Southeast Alaska.
