We had an early skiff ride along the Pacaya river in search for squirrel monkeys, scarlet macaws, yellow and blue macaws and any other early riser wildlife that is active at this time of the day. We were lucky to spot a few of the squirrel monkeys, as well as some blue and yellow macaws and red belly macaws sitting together on the same tree.

Along the ride, some Amazon pink dolphins were spotted, as well as some large elegant birds known as “Jabiru”.  Howler monkeys were seen jumping in between the old trees.  We finally arrived to a calm waters, where a lagoon inhabited by the Amazon pink dolphins is located.   The river water was warm, almost like bath water, enough to sustain a large variety of fish, which serve as food for the two common species of river dolphins around here.

We soon decided to go for the “Amazon plunge” and jump into the warm waters of the “Yanayacu Lagoon”.  One could hear the river dolphins swimming in the area, as well as large flocks of neo-Tropical cormorants getting ready to call it a day on a common rockery area they had chosen for the night.

We returned to our mother ship, the Defin ll, with an incredible sunset and ready for another adventure in the Upper Amazon.
