The first day of our expedition brings an abundance of animal encounters for us all here on board the Delfin II. A pre-breakfast skiff ride to Pahuachiro Creek yields a family of night monkeys just as curious about us as we are about them! Cameras click and whir as we try and capture the diversity of life to be found along this small waterway off the main Yanayacu River.
After a scrumptious breakfast we are privileged to actually hike in the rainforest on the Casual Trail with several local guides who are keen on showing us the different critters that can be found there. Poison dart frogs, a green anaconda shedding its skin, and even a brown-throated sloth, are all there for us to inspect and photograph. A highlight of the hike is a friendly Peruvian pink-footed tarantula, which allows closer inspection.
Our afternoon explorations by skiff of the Yanayacu and Pucate Rivers yield even more sloths in trees as well as a myriad of wading birds amongst the hyacinth plants floating in the flooded forest here. January is high water time and we are able to get to places with our skiffs that will not be reachable during the low water period.
