After several days of Costa Rican rainforest, Coiba Marine National Park was just the break we needed. Gustavo’s morning update call came with much needed news, “Good morning my friends it is 7am and the sun seems to be shining over our little snorkelling island of Granito de Oro “Just the word this hardy group needed. A sunny sandy island surrounded by beautiful aqua blue water”.
Although we had wonderful rainforest walks in Costa Rica, Coiba Island unexplored rainforest still drew a hardy half to enter the islands dark tangled forest in search of any and all critters lurking about. We did see white face capuchin monkeys: a sub species, plus some flycatchers and forest wrens, the trial walk gave us an idea of what this once penal colony must have been like.
Coiba Marine National Park is the third largest Marine National in the world, for the Pacific side of Central America it is the largest currently.
Our mission has not only been to bring our guests to this pristine part of the world but also to participate in the protection and conservation of this Marine National Park, working long side with MarViva from Costa Rica and the Panamanian National Park system providing your donations in to this latest dynamic ecosystem.
We enjoyed a wonderful morning of snorkelling around a small island adjacent to Coiba know as Ganito de Oro. We saw a great amount of fish: surgeonfish parrotfish, moorish idol, king angelfish and a very pristine coral life. Some decided to enjoy just kayaking and paddle boarding to end a great day at the beach.
We then departed in the afternoon on our way to the Panama Canal.
