Our ship, crowned in mist, awoke to the bustling fishing town of Petersburg, Alaska, this morning. As new commercial fishing openings were announced, boat after boat motored up and swiftly embarked out to sea in hopes of returning home with a hefty load of salmon.
We disembarked and spent all day between the nature and culture of this local fishing town. We biked, hiked, and puttered around the town and nearby forest, exploring mountains, muskegs, and local gardening. Petersburg is a town truly built on the flesh and bones of the salmon industry, with hardly a citizen not involved in the annual summer harvest.
