Our day began as we slowly slid towards the dock in Petersburg, the Town That Fish Built. We were escorted by a squadron of pigeon guillemots that, unlike their less urban, cliff-dwelling conspecifics, had decided to make their homes under the boardwalks of the fish processing plants in this hardworking town.
As the sun rose over Devil’s Thumb in the distance, guests disembarked National Geographic Quest and started various adventures, including hiking along the boardwalks to the nearby muskegs of Kupreanof Island, biking around the town of Petersburg, or exploring the fishing fleets and bustling life in the harbor via Zodiac or with underwater camera.
