We awoke in Port Althorp, a small, protected inlet on the southern side of Cross Sound and the northern shore of Chichagof Island. Undeterred by the alternating drizzle and rain showers, we eagerly boarded expedition landing crafts and rode ashore for a morning of kayaking, beach walking, and sojourning into the mature forests that surround the port. After lunch, we picked up anchor and headed to the Inian Islands, where we traveled by expedition landing craft around the islands to view eagles’ nests and sea lions and ride the rough waves of Cross Sound.
