We arrived alongside in Port Stanley at 7.00 a.m. It was cloudy with breaks that allowed the sun to shine on the town as we made our approach. No Zodiacs for us this morning as National Geographic Explorer tied to the dock and we could get on and off via the gangway.

There were various activities available. One was to visit Long Island Farm, which is a working sheep farm about one hour’s drive away by bus. Neil and Glenda, who owned the farm, their son Paul, and their parents gave us a good insight into the life on ‘Camp,’ which is what the Falkland islanders call anywhere away from the towns. This included sheep shearing and peat cutting demonstrations. There was also a bus tour that took in the highlights of Port Stanley and the surrounding area. For those wishing to stretch their legs in the afternoon there was a hike in the hills that surround the town. Many guests also spent time on their own wandering around town taking in the atmosphere of this unusual and delightful place, which is so steeped in history.
