This morning, we arrived at our first and only stop in Corsica, the harbor at Porto-Vecchio. Strong winds closed our original harbor at Bonifacio, so we detoured east and maintained our planned schedule for the day.
After breakfast, we embarked coaches for a 90-minute drive across winding roads through the wild, rocky landscape to the town of Sarténe. On our drive, we stopped at a photo viewpoint to shoot the lion rock and rugged coastline. We had a 45-minute guided walking tour around the medieval town of Sarténe to learn about its history of pirate attacks and intense battles. Sarténe is often called “the most truly Corsican town in Corsica.”
After lunch, we boarded buses again for a short trip to Bonifacio, located in a fjord-like harbor. We hopped on Le Petit Tran, a train that whisked us to the top of the steep limestone cliffs that are home to the historic old town and citadel. Our local guides walked us down the narrow streets to historic churches and photogenic vistas. Afterwards, guests had free time to explore and shop. Everyone had the option to ride the train back to the bus or walk down the steep switchbacks.
