When we awoke just off Puerto Escondido we were greeted by two fin whales. Glassy seas and beautiful light combined to give us perfect views. Fin whales are fast, agile and are found in the Sea of Cortez this time of year seeking out krill to feed their enormous appetites. As we cruised south through Loretto Marine Park all eyes were fixed on the horizon searching for more cetaceans. We struck gold with a large pod of common long-beaked dolphins with excellent views as they surfed the bow wave and surfed the wake of the National Geographic Sea Lion.

Rounding out a perfect day was an even more perfect evening. We landed at Puerto Gato and spread out for walks among the red sandstone before settling into dinner served on the beach under the rising moon. Sunset, s’mores and cowboy songs around the campfire made this a Baja evening to remember.
