What an amazing first day of our expedition! We could not ask for better conditions than what we have experienced today. Blue skies, no wind and remarkably calm seas. After a comfortable journey from Singapore, the National Geographic Orion arrived at its first destination, a paradise-like island in the Anambas Archipelago, Indonesia.

Located in the South China Sea, Pulau Lintang is one of the many uninhabited islands of this stunning archipelago. Granite islands covered in dense forest, coral reefs and white sand beaches surrounded us. The alluring sea casted its spell and we all headed to our first snorkel opportunity to gaze at the colorful fish, reefs and its interesting creatures.

Then it was time to savor a delicious barbecue at the beach, prepared by our highly dedicated galley crew. Guests had the chance to paddle kayaks around the picturesque islands or enjoy a revitalizing swim. Glass-bottom zodiac tours, our window to the underwater world, were also offered. After a great morning, naturalist Cristiana Damiano presented a lecture on “Coral Reefs of the Indo-Pacific,” a welcomed occasion to learn more about this interesting but fragile ecosystem. The Captain’s Welcome Cocktail party was a delightful chance to meet and greet the crew behind the ship’s operational duties. A magical sunset delighted us while the National Geographic Orion sailed to its next amazing destination.
