We began our explorations of French Polynesia by crossing the lagoon of Rangiroa Atoll, following a track through the shallow coral heads that our ship had laid earlier this month to the fabled Blue Lagoon, a site that no other expedition ship has ever visited.  Hiking beside the crystalline aquamarine water we encountered endemic blue lorikeets while in the shallows, and off the nearby reef we found many beautiful black-tipped reef sharks.  After making our way back across the lagoon we completed a perfect day with bow-riding dolphins in the sunset as we exited the atoll and headed out into the open Pacific.
