“Do you think we are really going to sail?” That’s often the first question I’m asked from first-time guests on the Sea Cloud, looking for reassurance that the experience will live up to the beauty of the brochures. Fortunately, about half of our current guests have travelled on previous Sea Cloud voyages, so their enthusiasm for the journey was evident.

Although there was no wind during the setting-of-sails and the expedition leader’s “play-by-play” explanation, I reassured everyone that the wind would come up steadily as the land warmed. And come up it did, as we ended up with a spectacular sail. First, the ship heeled, followed by a sudden need to come about; the movement had all the tall-ship-sailing-action we only dream about. What a day! This is what we came for . . .
