Today is the last day of expedition in the Galapagos Islands and we are visiting San Cristobal, the easternmost island.
The place we are visiting is called Pitt Point. Early in the morning, the weather is fantastic. Zodiacs take groups of us to a sparkling yellow sand beach where many sea lions hang out. We take a trail created by rainwater erosion. The trail goes up to an elevation of almost 250 feet, where we have a fantastic view of rugged volcanic formations of compacted ash. The trail leads us to a red-footed booby nesting area near the cliffs.
Returning to the beach, some of us hang around in the company of friendly sea lions. Some sea lions roll around on the sand while others swim in shallow waters. The youngest are the most curious and easily approach people to play. Other guests take Zodiacs rides to explore the landscape and observe wildlife.
In the afternoon, we navigate to a new spot near the main island called Kicker Rock, where we can enjoy snorkeling with sharks, rays, turtles and more. Colorful invertebrates abound on the walls of this spectacular formation that resembles a sleeping lion in shape.
After the snorkeling session, we come back on board the National Geographic Endeavour to circumnavigate Kicker Rock as the sun set. A perfect ending to a day in paradise.
