On our last full day in the Galápagos Archipelago, we have arrived at San Cristóbal, one of the oldest islands in the archipelago. This is a very interesting island in that there is a high rate of endemism amongst the organisms found here, due to its position in relation to the predominant air and oceanic currents. Punta Pitt, our visitor’s site in the morning, was the first outcrop of Galápagos land sighted by the crew of the HMS Beagle back in 1835, and was one of the four islands visited by Charles Darwin. The capital town of the province, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, is located in its southwestern coast.
