We began exploring Maruyali Caño very early in the morning, as the animals in the Amazon wake up early too. We boarded our skiffs and headed to our destination. As predicted, the birds were at their best! We spotted several species and heard their different songs. But the highlight of the morning was provided by the squirrel monkeys! They fed on nectar so close to our skiff that it felt as if we had been invited to their breakfast! But we had our own breakfast waiting for us onboard the Delfin II.
After breakfast, we visited the community of San Francisco. This is a great place to learn about the hospitality of the Amazonian people. After being invited into their homes, we learned about new sustainability projects taking place in the area, such as the fishing pools and the reforestation of plantations. Even more exciting was listening to the stories of different women who, with the support of the non-profit group Minga Peru, have been able to learn about their rights in society and become community leaders starting these projects.
Later, we were welcomed to a local school where children and adults sang for each other. We shared supplies with the teachers and learned about their experiences teaching in such remote areas.
Then we navigated to the place were the Ucayali and Marañon rivers form the Amazonas. With a Peruvian traditional drink we celebrated before continuing to our next destination: Clavero Lake.
At Clavero Lake, some guests enjoyed a refreshing swim. Then we explored the surrounding areas. We spotted great dolphins and many different birds. A beautiful sunset was the perfect closure to the day.
