This morning, after spending a very restful night by the river’s edge, and a wonderful breakfast, inside the beautifully decorated dining room of the Delfin II, we boarded our skiffs to take a short ride across the wide river to visit the community of San Jorge.

San Jorge is a small community of “rivereños” (riverside people) belonging to theKucama-Kucamilla ethnic group. As we walked through their little village, we found the people of San Jorge to be very friendly, and we were warmly welcomed into their homes and the school. Aided by our naturalist’s translation, we learned a lot about their lives and hardships, and we were pleasantly surprised to find out that though they face difficulties, they have a good life that is highly dependent on nature, dependent on what the river and the forest offers to them. We also had an opportunity to admire and buy some of their crafts made of wood, nuts, and fibers from the forest, before returning to our ship for lunch.

During the afternoon the Delfin II repositioned farther and deeper into the river, where we explored an area called Cedro Caño by skiff. We had a wonderful time cruising around and finding more wildlife. We spotted an abundance of creatures, including several species of herons, parrots, pigmy marmosets and several three-toed sloths.

The weather was superb, and the low golden sunlight on our way back to ship. The sun began to set as we settled in for dinner, providing us with a gorgeous sunset as a perfect ending for a great day.
