One of the unexpected joys of traveling in the upper Amazon of Peru is the interaction we have with the local people. Sure, we come for the birds, forest, and monkeys, and yes we did see those today. However, some of the things that will most stay in our heads and hearts were the experiences we shared with the inhabitants of the Amazon.
The village of San Jorge contains a few hundred people and is perched on a ridge of terra firme above the Marañon River. The people are of Kokama native descent and have become quite proud of their heritage. They welcomed us into their village and even into some of their homes, so we could understand a bit of river life. We also visited the school, and enjoyed seeing the young kids having fun in school.
Another important part of our day was learning of the project that our conservation partner, Minga Peru is involved with here. Minga provides education in various ways, but focuses mainly on women's health and rights. We heard firsthand accounts of how the villagers lives have changed due to the knowledge they have gained from Minga. Inspiring for sure!
In the afternoon, we explored the oxbow lake at Clavero. Here, we enjoyed many birds, a few monkeys, and a great sloth showing some yoga poses. Some of us kayaked and others swam in the beautiful water. But our memories here will include the locals as well. Whether it was the fisherman who showed us his catch, the kids on the bank watching us all afternoon, or the three girls paddling the canoe with their hands, these not only filled our cameras with images but our minds as well.
