Today was tortoise day for our guests of National Geographic Endeavour II. This
morning when we woke up, we looked through our window and saw the town of
Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. It has a population of around 20,000 people
and is home to the Charles Darwin Foundation and Tortoise Breeding Center.
Our day began with a visit to the Tortoise Breeding
Center, where we learned about the different conservation projects happening in
the Galapagos. The morning continued with two excursion options: a visit to a
local school for some of our guests, while others chose to go see a family
owned sugar cane farm. In the afternoon, we went further up into the highlands
to see the tortoises in their natural habitat.
Every day is different and wonderful in the
Galapagos Islands, and today was definitely one of the highlights of the trip!
