Our adventures today on National Geographic Resolution began at around midnight when we approached the fast ice near Snow Hill Island where we spotted emperor penguins. We enjoyed fantastic pastel colors painting the large icebergs and mirror-like conditions on the water around the ship. After enjoying the midnight sun, many of us took a quick nap before breakfast and a full morning of exploration on the fast ice.
Opening the forward shell doors, we stepped out onto the fast ice and set out to explore. We were approached by emperor, gentoo, and Adelie penguins as well as some Wilson’s storm petrels and snowy petrels. Additionally, there was a fantastic backdrop of large icebergs that were frozen in the fast ice. Many guests took off to the water to explore the edge under their own power, by way of kayak. This was a fantastic and memorable last off-ship activity on our expedition to Antarctica.
In the afternoon, we started our way north in the Weddell Sea, heading towards the Drake Passage, passing by many amazingly impressive icebergs, including two very large tabular icebergs called A76C and A80A.
