It is never too late to try something new. Conditions were challenging with a dense fog surrounding us and 40 knots of wind blowing from the southwest. At 5:15 am, we approached the southernmost group of islands, not the Cape Horn National Park but the Diego Ramirez Islands, a little archipelago that is even more remote. We had the chance, for the first time, to see this remarkable place at close range from the comfort of National Geographic Explorer. After a brilliant maneuverer by ice pilot Yuriy to get us as close as possible, we continued our last day at sea as we headed towards the Beagle Channel. The pilot was waiting for us, and we continued a lovely, calm, and sunny transit until our final destination: Ushuaia.
On behalf of the crew, Captain Peik wished all guests a safe trip back home as we raised our glasses one last time to celebrate an amazing expedition to Antarctica.
