Waking up to the gentle rolling of the ship, our minds played over the previous days of our wonderful voyage - but there wasn’t too much time to daydream! During the morning, Rich gave a wonderfully illustrated presentation on some of the destinations that Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic travel to around the globe. Always a pleasure to see some of Rich’s beautiful images and learn about these magical places.
Brent gave a presentation on penguins in the late morning, with lots of info about their general natural history and breeding biology. The penguins had clearly been a crowd pleaser during this trip, and to have seen Magellanic penguins, the three brush-tailed penguins (chinstrap, Gentoo and Adelie), and an emperor penguin was definitely a highlight for many.
After lunch we enjoyed the sea conditions, watching albatross and white-chinned and cape petrels hanging behind the ship. All of this life is here in the Southern Ocean due to one thing – plankton. And that was the focus of our next presentation from Shaylyn, explaining how all of the life that is here in the Antarctic depends on this foundation of life.
We then relaxed for the rest of the afternoon, until recap when Sarah, our videographer, showed the teaser for the fantastic video chronicle that she had been diligently working on. It was amazing to relive those first few days – our after dinner landing at the Aitcho Islands, and our wonderful day in Cierva Cove and Neko Harbour. Having seen and achieved so much on this journey, we had almost forgotten what we did on those days!
