Heading south into the unknown, we awoke to beautiful light casting on the tabular icebergs that the Weddell Sea is known for. Breakfast plans were put on hold after the expedition leader spotted an emperor penguin on the ice flow. It’s a rare sighting at this time of year in the Weddell Sea as the colony spreads far and wide for fishing after the fast ice melts.
The hotel team then treated us all to a BBQ on deck, while the bridge team positioned the ship for a perfect backdrop of sea ice. This backdrop then became the destination of our afternoon operation which was a spectacular walk on sea ice.
The evening wrapped up with golden light casting over the Weddell Sea. Now we head north!
