Today we woke up on the western shore of Newfoundland with sunny skies and pleasant Atlantic summer temperatures as we approached the Bay of Islands.
Guests spent the morning attending several presentations. First, we learnt about the geology of Newfoundland and Gros Morne UNESCO World Heritage Site from naturalist Sergei, who shared about the unique and fascinating occurrence of exposed mantle in the region. Following this was an introduction to Red Bay in anticipation of our upcoming visit. Expedition diver Hailey gave guests a behind the scenes look at the underwater archeological excavations of 16th century shipwrecks.
Windy weather conditions kept plans in flux throughout the day. Some members of the expedition team went out to tow a local fishing boat in need of assistance while others attended our third presentation of the day on birds of Atlantic Canada by Shayne, our certified photo instructor (and certified bird nerd).
As the sun persisted, we were treated to a barbecue on the sundeck with local sausages and beer. Susan, our cultural specialist, took guests through the motions of becoming an honorary Newfoundlander, which involved costumes, rum, peppermint, and fishy kisses. Spirits were high as we continued cruising to our next destination, Gros Morne National Park.
