Thomas Bay & Petersburg

Our first morning view was in Scenic Cove, a hidden, mysterious cove, inhabited by the Kushtikas or flying monkeys that ate unsuspecting people who ventured in the area. Very probably it was a story made up by some miners, to scare others away from a strike! In any case, it is a lovely cove, small, with high vertical walls and made, today, more mysterious by the low clouds of fog.

We saw some harbor seals and arctic terns, all looking for food! After a while we turned and left the mystery behind, all of us safe. On we sailed, to Cascade Creek, an interesting walk that led us along a good boardwalk to a fantastic, roaringly wet cascade, with snowmelt waters. Some of us went up and beyond the waterfall, others stayed beneath it, taking in the view. And the interesting mushrooms to be seen! At the same time, kayaking was taking place, to find some quiet and solitude. Harbor seals, those curious animals, appeared to almost everybody.

And then we lifted anchor and set off for Petersburg, founded in the late 1890’s by the Norwegian Peter Bushmann, as a fisherman’s village, with a monstrous amount of ice available, floating in from the Le Conte Glacier. Here we visited the town, or hiked to one of the nearby bogs or muskegs and met many plants that are adapted to living in acid conditions. Yes, quite an interesting Alaska day!
