Extraordinary experiences in a beautiful land with rich history
Bordeaux, located along France’s Garonne River estuary, is a global center for wine and gastronomy. In the bucolic countryside grow ancient vines so prestigious that UNESCO recognized Bordeaux as a World Heritage site. Immerse yourself in this extraordinary viniculture heritage with tastings at chateaux and visits to markets and restaurants where you will come away with an appreciation for regional specialties. Our indulgences will be interposed with an exploration of the lovely medieval village of Saint-Émilion—where you will discover a fascinating underground church and catacombs by private tour—and Bordeaux’s historic city center.
Day 1 - Bordeaux, France / Disembark / Saint-Émilion
Welcome to Bordeaux, the capital of France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Kick off your exploration of this celebrated region by venturing out into the vineyards surrounding the city and visiting the medieval village of Saint-Émilion. Visit two different chateaux this morning: enjoy a traditional tasting at the first—a classified estate—and have lunch filled with regional specialties at the second. This afternoon, walk with a local guide through the picturesque village of Saint-Émilion and take a private tour of the unusual underground monolithic church. There will be time to soak up the atmosphere of the narrow, centuries-old cobblestone streets at leisure before heading to Bordeaux and checking into our hotel. Admire the city’s charming mansions and gardens on a city center walking tour before dining with fellow travelers this evening. (L,D)
Day 2 - Bordeaux
Explore the foodie side of Bordeaux this morning with visits to two food markets: Marché des Capucins and Les Halles de Bacalan. Meander through the stalls and take in the rich food tradition of the region, before enjoying lunch on your own to indulge in the regional specialties that caught your eye. This afternoon, experience the unique Les Bassins de Lumières—the largest digital art center in the world—fashioned out of a massive WWII German submarine bunker. Before heading to dinner, stop off at the Musée du Vin, located in a wine trader’s mansion from the 18th century. Here, you will be introduced to the Bordelaise wine trade before enjoying a traditional cuisine dinner. (B,D)
