Delhi Pre-Voyage Extension

Explore Delhi—where captivating history meets vibrant modern life —on this two-day optional pre-voyage extension. Once home to legendary figures like the Mughals and the Pāṇḍavas, India’s capital city has managed to blend its ancient charm with the wide avenues of imperial times and skyscrapers of modern day. Although it has a history stretching back over 3,000 years, much of the city you’ll explore was planned by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who laid out a grandiose central administrative area as a testament to British imperial pretensions.
Day 1 - New Delhi, India

Arrive in New Delhi and transfer to the hotel: the Taj Mahal, New Delhi—homebase for the duration of the pre-voyage extension. Enjoy time at your leisure for the remainder of the day.

Day 2 - Old Delhi

Dive deep into the beating heart of Old Delhi today, as you take a guided tour of the Chandni Chowk Market. Immerse yourself in the colorful stalls and bustling alleyways of this historical market on a rickshaw ride before visiting the Jama Masjid, the largest and most splendid mosque in India. Then, follow your guide to the spice market on Khari Baoli, a street in Old Delhi. In operation since the 17th century, this market is known for its wholesale grocery and Asia's largest wholesale spice market. Marvel at the extensive offering of spices, nuts, herbs, rice, teas and more. Enjoy lunch in Old Delhi and spend the balance of the day at leisure. (B,L)

Day 3 - New Delhi

Transition from old to new: explore New Delhi today. Stop at the magnificent president's residence, known as the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Completed in 1929, the palace-like building is an interesting blend of Mughal and western architectural styles—the most obvious Indian feature being the impressive copper dome. Next, discover the India Gate, located at the eastern end of the ceremonial Rajpath boulevard. The 42-meter a stone arch of triumph bears the names of 85,000 Indian Army soldiers who died in the campaigns of WWI and other battles. Visit the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, one of Delhi’s most prominent Sikh Temple of worship, and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Humayun’s Tomb, India's first garden-tomb. Lunch is included before the afternoon at leisure. (B,L)
