Scottish Highlands Pre-Voyage Extension
Extraordinary experiences in a beautiful land with rich history
Scotland’s rich history and culture come to life on a journey through the renowned Scottish Highlands. Explore some of the country’s most iconic mountain ranges—notably the Nevis range, home to the country’s highest mountain—visit Neptune’s Staircase on the Caledonian Canal, and tour storied castles, including Urquhart Castle set along the shores of Loch Ness. Cap off the extension in the capital city Edinburgh, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you will visit The Royal Yacht Britannia and sample Scotch Whiskey during a guided tasting.
Day 1 - Scottish Highlands, Scotland
Arrive at Inverness airport and transfer to the Kingsmills Hotel (or similar). This afternoon, join your fellow travelers on a visit to Culloden Heritage Center and historic battlefield for your introduction to the centuries long struggle between Scottish clansmen and British rulers. This evening, join the group for a welcome dinner at the hotel. (D)
Day 2 - Scottish Highlands
Start your day along the shores of the famous Loch Ness. Perched along the lake’s shores is Urquhart Castle—a critical strategic stronghold in the Highlands that met a dramatic end in 1692 when the castle was destroyed to stop it falling into Jacobite hands. Enjoy lunch at a Highland Cattle farm before continuing to Neptune’s Staircase, a remarkable ladder of eight locks that marks the entrance to the Caledonian Canal. The last stop of the day is at the Glencoe Visitor Center—the gateway to one of Scotland’s most iconic valleys—where you’ll learn more about Scottish Highland clan history. Finish your day along the banks of the River Orchy as we settle into the Bridge of Orchy hotel (or similar) for the night. (B,L,D)
Day 3 - Scottish Highlands
This morning, wake up in the quaint village of Bridge of Orchy and opt for a morning walk along the West Highland Way, a long-distance hiking path that winds its way past our lodge and into Rannoch Moor, one of the last remaining wildernesses in Europe. Then, enjoy a scenic drive through the Highlands, on your way to Stirling, the original capital of Scotland. Enjoy lunch in the old town and a walk through its storied streets, following in the footsteps of Mary, Queen of Scots; William Wallace; and Robert the Bruce. Round out your time in the city by walking the halls of Stirling Castle—perched on volcanic rock over the River Forth—and learning about the history of the estate, which includes over 16 attacks. Dinner is at Edinburgh’s Apex Grassmarket Hotel (or similar) tonight. (B,L,D)
Day 4 - Edinburgh
Start your day with a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia, Queen Elizabeth II’s floating palace for over 40 years. Explore five of her decks, from the elegant State Apartments to the gleaming Engine Room. After lunch at the hotel, enjoy your afternoon at leisure or join an optional visit to the National Museum, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture, and history. This evening, walk along the Royal Mile—five cobble stone streets that still hold the remnants of dramatic timber buildings named after prominent landowners—which connects the Castle to Palace of Holyroodhouse. Dinner is at a local restaurant tonight. (B,L,D)
Day 5 - Edinburgh / Embark Ship
This morning after breakfast, return to the cusp of the Royal Mile and visit Edinburgh Castle, a magnificent landmark that dominates the city’s skyline. Perched on an extinct volcano and offering stunning views, this castle is a powerful national symbol and part of Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage site. Marvel at the Crown Jewels, the different architectural styles, and reflect on its importance through Scottish history. This afternoon, lunch will be followed by a Scottish whisky tasting before embarking the National Geographic Explorer. (B,L)
