Today’s adventure is taking place on satellite islands surrounding Santiago Island, one of the largest in the archipelago. On this clear Galapagos morning we disembark early on the island of Bartolomé. We walk this small Scoria lava island named after one officer on board the HMS Beagle who was great company of young naturalist Charles Darwin during his voyage.
This attractive island is great to learn about the young geology of the archipelago; and give the visitor a great encounter with the pioneer botany that is always so interesting. Above all, the island of Bartolomé is a location with an astonishing landscaping that gives everyone the opportunity to stop in here and walk the three hundred seventy five steps to enjoy a fantastic view. The early walk demands a great breakfast afterwards. Then we proceed to a nice beach for snorkeling around Pinnacle Rock. The view from the summit of this island is a Galapagos trademark.
The afternoon stop takes place in another location just thirty minutes south of Bartolomé; the island of Sombrero Chino. A shallow water channel formed in the most south easterly corner of Santiago. This channel is a great stop to snorkel and swim with sea lions and tropical fish. Today it was particularly special to see the marine iguanas diving and munching under water. It was great!
We take a short fun Zodiac ride along the coast of Sombrero Chino to look for some Galapagos penguins and end a memorable day in this great corner of the planet.
