Today we got to enjoy what is, in my opinion, the greatest wildlife experience possible. We spent the day amongst the gray whales in their breeding lagoons here in Baja California, Mexico. Numerous mother and calf pairs were observed, traveling back and forth in the lagoon. A few whales decided to interact with us a bit more, much to our delight. We got to witness a few breaches, where the baby launches itself out of the water and crashes down, making a huge splash. A few spyhops were also seen. This is a bit like whale yoga as the head rises straight out of the water and then holds for a bit. One baby opened its mouth wide, showing off the baleen. And then ultimate: many of us got to experience curious mother and calf gray whales. These whales would come to our boats to get touched, and we were happy to indulge them. It does not get any better than that!
