Today is our first full day of our adventure in the Amazon. I was happy to see that all our guests attended the first early-morning outing, despite the long days traveling to get here. I suppose when you travel this far, there is no point in spending your precious time sleeping, right?
So our adventure began by traveling via skiffs (motored boats) into one of the narrow tributaries of the Marañon River. This creek is known locally as Pahuachiro Caño and was the door to discover the Amazon world.
As we traveled this narrow system of water, we encountered many species of birds that are well linked with the Amazonian ecosystem. Toucans and parrots were seeing in the canopy trees and flying the blue skies as they searched for food. In this part of the world, as heat and humidity are constant, animal activity is best during the early morning and late afternoon. By going early today, we were able to capture the activity of all these birds starting to head out to their feeding grounds.
After breakfast we hiked in a location known as Casual. As we walked its trail, several locals from the nearby village approached us with animal wildlife that they had encountered in the forests, and it was a great opportunity for us all to observe up-close wildlife that I am sure we would miss if we were all by ourselves. The locals have literally grown up in the forest, and they have great skills for finding things such as tiny little frogs, tarantulas and even the well-known anacondas.
In the afternoon we visited an area called Pucate-Yanayacu. This area was the convergence of two tributary rivers that reaches the main Marañon River. It is great to visit the Amazon region, but it is equally fascinating to learn the ecology and the complicated geography of the area and get to understand how all this system of rivers will eventually form the mighty Amazon River.
The outing had many encounters with birds, monkeys, exotic plants and trees, and just to make the ending of the day perfect, the sunset was phenomenal!
