We woke up early this morning, on just our second day of adventures in the upper Amazon River, to make the best of the day by starting early. The mornings are ideal, because they are cooler and the wildlife activity is the best.

While enjoying a superb breakfast in our beautifully decorated dinning room on the Delfin II, we couldn’t help it, that our lively conversations where occasionally interrupted by the magnificent views of the green lush forest and moving water outside. The large dinning room windows were like large plasma screens running beautiful footage…except that it was real! Birds of all sizes shapes and colors flying across the sky in different directions, and an occasional small canoe passing by with local Amazon people headed somewhere.

Soon after breakfast, we boarded our skiffs for a short ride to shore, to visit by foot the trails of an area called Casual. Fitted in rubber boots provided by our crew and escorted by our expert naturalists, we soon started discovering the tropical rainforest. Among the many nice creatures we saw during our walk, probably the best was a Hoffman’s two-toed sloth that slowly climbed a tree by the trail. One of the iconic mammals of the New World tropics.

After another great meal onboard our floating hotel, we explored some more the Yanayacu River by skiff. The afternoon light was ideal for photography, and we had great opportunities to get up-close to the beautiful capped herons that where bathing by the rivers edge. Birds really take good care of their precious feathers, and the capped heron was a good example of this.

On our way back to the ship we stopped briefly to photograph a group of the large-billed terns that also posed nicely for us.

Today was truly a great start for our adventure in the Amazon.
