Today we visited Chinese Hat, a satellite islet southeast of Santiago Island. With an early morning start, we began by kayaking with the rising sun. We enjoyed Zodiac tours, a glass-bottom boat excursion, and a wonderful snorkel. We were surrounded with views of a monogenetic cinder and a contrasting forest of candelabra cacti.
In the afternoon, we navigated to Sullivan Bay, a visitor’s site on the southeastern side of Santiago. This famous anchoring spot has witnessed the arrival of important people over the course of human history, including Charles Darwin during his Beagle voyage. The site features a young pahoehoe lava flow dated to 1897. We enjoyed a lava walk as well as a Zodiac tour along the iron-oxide coastline of Santiago.
